The French tour.
Hello all,
Here we are back from our France's tour. We have recouped from our trip, taken back our life pattern, reconnected withour loved ones, etc.
We promised you a report well here it is in the format of a log:
Tuesday August 10th 2010
Departure from Montréal, all goes well except we have even more luggage and stuff than we expected, that means a weight surplus that costs us (which certainly didn't disagree with Air Transat).
Wednesday August 11th 2010
We arrived at the Bordeaux's airport. Francis (of R.T.D. fame) is there to great us. We pile our luggage in the vehicles and about an 1h15 later we arrive to the house that will be our residence for the next 2 weeks (Thank you Olivier and Brigitte :-D ). We are all very tired and et we go and have quiet diner at Marie's and Francis's place. The evening ends early because we are tired a diner with some of the voluntary workers is planned for the next evening.
Thursday August 12th 2010
We all have slept around 12 hours (hurrah for the time zone difference and a sleepless night crammed like sardines in an uncomfortable plane). We enjoy fresh bread, jam and excellent coffee for our breakfast. Denis is taking care of the guitars, one of which is a loaned 12 strings, J.F. is taking a shower, Jean-Philippe is watching a deawood episode, Nick just got up and is trying to wake himself; Sébastien who went after last night's diner (youth is a blessing) is still asleep. We have spent our day relaxing by the pool. Then it was time for diner where we reconvened with lots of people we met (and appreciated) in 2006.
Friday August 13th 2010
Tour start. Tonigh we perform at St-Augustin sur mer.
A morning routine is installed. Jean-François is always the first to get up, he quietly eats breakfast and chats whith is family. A few hours later Denis, Nick and Jean-Philippe get up in this order (or not). Anyway we always know when Jean-Philippe is up because he listen to music as soon as he's up (sometimes we feel like that he starts the music even before opening his eyes ;) ). Then Sébastien, who goes out every night, gets up usually mere minutes before it's time to leave.
For tonight show, the keyword is "semi-smooth", because we won't have a public of aficionados used to rock shows. About 200 people came to see the show. The welcome we got from a public, that don't really know progressive rock, was fabulous.
Saturday august 14th 2010
Tonight it's Ronce-les-bains turn.
When we arrive on set, early in the afternoon, we have the pleasure of finding out that the stage is about 25 feets from the beach. While we were setting up the stage, many came to see what was happening and promised to come back in the evening to see the show. We were supposed to go on at 10h00 p.m., but the show was pushed forward to 9h30 p.m. because of the wind picking up, it's getting cold and rain is predicted. Finaly Hamadryad must have pleased mother Nature because the wind died, the temperature stayed nice for the more than 400 people that came to the show (comprise of about ten persons that already knew Hamadryad and came on purpose to see us). Excellent welcome and an encore was demanded. Many stayed after the show to meet us, to praise us and get some signatures.
Sunday August 15th 2010
Tonight it's La Palmyre.
That night there was less spectators than the previous night (around 150 people), but there was more Progressive rock fans. The temperature didn't help much because it was colder than usual for mid-August. No worries because if we didn't have the quantity, we sure had a quality audience. That night we had the chance to taste some "Fallet Dart" champagne with the friendly wine makers, that happen to be fans of Hamadryad.
Since it was cold, we had no choice but to drink to keep warm. ;O
Monday August 16th 2010
Merchers-sur-Gironde.
Today the guys planned a practice at the house to finalize one piece... The practice never took place finaly, the guys were to happy layng by the pool with one (or two, or three) beers in hand. Only about an hundred spectators came to the show but they were very receptive. Once more the stage is very near the beach. It was so humid that Denis was joking about the fact that his guitar's cords rusted during the show.
And again because of the temperature we "had" to drink up through the evening. ;)
Tuesday August 17th 2010
Movie-concert at Vaux-sur-mer.
It's the last show before a well deserved break and it is also a unique show where Hamadryad is playing their songs and some covers while a movie is being shown on a exterior screen. At mid-afternoon (on the site of the movie-concert) we had an interview with Renaud from the Koid'9 magazine, Renaud is somebody that knows music and ask intelligent and relevant questions (we can't wait to see the result in the next Koid'9 that will also have a special file on the Crescendo festival). This was a grandiose show, the music that was played went so well with the images and the action of the movie. Again rain was expected, but only came down after the stage was taken down after the show. Even if the major part of the pieces played were covers and that the main attraction was the movie itself, many applause were given to the band and many took the time to meet the guys after the show.
P.S. If you ever go and see a movie-concert at Vaux-sur-mer make sure you have you bug repellants !!! It's a friendly advice :-D
Wednesday August 18th 2010
A day off. It raining a little bit and there is some short sunny periods. A grand diner is to take place during the course of which we have the chance to meet many musicians from the many groups taking part in the 2010 edition of the Crescendo festival. There was, among others, some Ukrainian, some Iranians, some Lituanians, some Italians, some French and some Quebecers… A true united nations of prog.
The "pineau des charentes" and the love of music fed a lot of conversations. The diner ended relatively early because many bands were to perform the very next day.
Thursday august 19th 2010
The Crescendo festival is under way!
We spent the day relaxing because we already have 5 shows under the belt and tonight we only havee to be spectators.
We went on site to enjoy the shows. Many spectators came to meet us and drink with us, even if we are not to play untill saturday. The crowd pressing itself in front of the stage is compact even if it's the first day and it's a Thursday… It looks good for the rest of the festival.
Fridat August 20th 2010
Day2 of the festival.
It's still very nice wheater and it's warm. Today is another day of relaxation for the whole band; pool, beach and sunburns are the order of the day. We once again go back to the site to enjoy the music and make discoveries. Once more there is still a lot of spectators and a warm welcome is given to each band.
Tonight we don't abuse the bottle and we go to bed "relatively" early, because tomorrow is the big day and we plan to give them a show to remenber.
Saturday August 21th 2010
That's it! It's today!
It is the hottest day since we've been here (about 34 degrees Celsius). We arrive early on site and proceed with our soundcheck, everything goes perfectly and Hamadryad can't stand still because of the excitement.
The day passes. the shows goe well, spectators are very receptive and give each band a warm welcome. Then it's our turn to go on stage. Even if we have a little technical problem (electical), which did not happen during the soundcheck (but reminded us of the problem we faced during our show back in 2006), Hamadryad takes control of the stage in front of the biggest audience of the festival, about 4000 people. On the first notes the public is won over and we hear the spectators applauding and demanding more of the same. For the encore, we asked the crowd to sing happy birthday to Sébastien who happened to be celebrating his 25th on that very same day. He never had so many people whishing him happy birthday at the same time, a moment that he will remember for ever. After an encore of about 25 minutes the show, and the festival, comes to an end. During the next hour and a half, the guys signed, shaked hands and talked with old and new fans. Then towards 1h30 a.m., we pigged out on sausage and quite a bit of wine and beer on the site itself. Finaly, we went back home to sleep because, after all, we still had a show on the next day.
Sunday August 22nd 2010
Last show of the tour at St-Georges-de-Didone.
There was a thunderstorm for most of the night (thunder and lightning were at the rendez-vous), but toward noon everything seems to clear out. There was about 150 spectators for our last show (it's the end of the hollidays for the majority of potential spectators), but those who came to this show were enthusiastic for Mavara and for Hamadryad. For this show, the last of the France's tour, The guys were very relaxed (the proof being the quantity of stupidities that were said on stage between the songs; except for Denis that literaly only said "three words"... Is it a lecture or is it a show???), but the guys had a lot of fun and played without any pressure but in a spectacular fashion; the best prestation (musicaly speaking) of the entire tour. After the show, there was still a lot of people requesting signatures, to shake our hands, to embrace us and to drink up (and drink up again) with us. We went to bed late, tired but happy.
Monday August 23th and Tuesday August 24th 2010
2 days of rest and relaxation lay ahead of us.
Monday, the guys mostly relaxed around the pool, Some went to the village for shopping. Tonight a fabulous feast awaits us at our "adoptive family's" place (thank you again Olivier, Brigitte and Sarah! We will never thank you enough for everything). The evening was dedicated the excellent food, the fabulous wines with, as a bonus, some very friendly people that we do not whish to leave.
Tuesday, it's our last day in France. Every one goes by himself for some shopping and to buy gifts for our famylies and friends that we left behind in Québec and that are jealous.
Wednesday August 25th 2010
We leave in the early morning to get to the airport. We pile our luggage in the vehicles and get on board, without being completely awaken. We all are a little sad to be leaving France, but on the other side we have so many memories that we want to share with our loved ones.
During the flight, we get to see a Jennifer Lopez's movie… In 5 visits to France I got to see 4 Jennifer Lopez's movies. Which bring me to this question: Are J-Lo's movies shown anywhere else than on planes?

Conclusions:
- The French public is "open", "receptive" and when they love you, they love you!
- There is somebody up there that loves us, because in 7 exterior shows, none were disturbed by the rain.
- The Crescendo festival is even more blessed because in it's 12 years of existence, the rain never interrupted a show.
- The Crescendo festival is the biggest French prog festival and it's certainly the most marvelous one we ever had the chance to play in.
Indelible memories:
- Breath taking landscapes.
- Fantastic food and wines.
- Inforgettable public and friends.
Question:
- When do we start over ?
For those that didn't have the chance to come and see us in St_Palais-sur-Mer, and those that saw us at the Crescendo and want to relive memories, here are a few links for some Youtube videos:
